The Future of Learning: Engineer in Residence

Don Ball, Engineer in Residence at Engineers of Tomorrow

May 2025

As part of Lifelong Learning Canada’s Kids in STEM/STEAM webinar series, we present a webinar with Engineer Don Ball.

The EIR program matches engineer volunteers with teachers who would like help with Science and Technology. It is designed for K – 12, but in my experience, most matches are in K – 6. Having said that, there are some very successful matches at higher grades too. For info, see www.eir.ca It was started in 1998 in Ontario, but has now spread across Canada, and there are about 300 engineer-teacher matches. I have been doing EIR since 2011, and I love doing it! The teachers, students, principals and parents tell me they love it too! I could speak to some of my experiences working mostly with grades 4 – 6, and some experiences with K – 3. I could talk about some of the technology creative tools I use (Tinkercad, Scratch, ScratchJr, micro:bits, Minecraft Education) and also the ways we help and mentor newer EIRs.

Climate Fresk is an international NGO based in France that gives climate change workshops. They use an innovative ‘card game’ to allow participants collaboratively to discover the science and impacts of climate change, and then brainstorm how we can combat climate change. Since late 2018, they have given workshops to over 2,000,000 participants in 167 countries in 45 languages, and they have over 90,000 volunteer facilitators worldwide! See Climate Fresk (world) – Climate Fresk Together with a friend who introduced it to me, we have given workshops to adults at public venues, to grade 5-6 students (shortened version for youth), to grade 9 students (intermediate or teen version), and in corporations. We are looking for more schools, public venues and corporations to work with.
